Synopsis
Forbidden love, madness, and a blood-soaked wedding night.
Lucia di Lammermoor is a tragic tale of feuding families and fractured sanity set in the seventeenth-century Scottish Highlands (derived from the Old English term for ‘lambs’ moor’, Lammermoor is the anglicized name for the Lammermuir Hills in southern Scotland).
The story focuses on Lucia Ashton, a woman caught in a power struggle orchestrated by her brother Enrico. To save their family’s declining fortunes, Enrico demands that Lucia marry the wealthy Lord Arturo, unaware that she has secretly pledged her heart to her family’s sworn enemy, Edgardo di Ravenswood. Before Edgardo departs for France on a political mission, the lovers exchange rings and vows of eternal fidelity.
While Edgardo is away, Enrico intercepts letters to Lucia and presents her with a forged document claiming that her lover has been unfaithful. Overwhelmed by her loss and under pressure from her family, Lucia reluctantly signs a marriage contract with Arturo. At that moment, Edgardo returns and curses Lucia for her apparent betrayal, causing Lucia to experience a complete emotional breakdown.
On her wedding night, Lucia murders Arturo in their bridal chamber. She then wanders into the wedding feast—in the opera’s famous ‘mad scene’—hallucinating a reunion with Edgardo and then collapsing to her death. On learning of Lucia’s demise and innocence, Edgardo stabs himself to be with her in the afterlife.
